A Note from Andrea

Sun VillageHere’s a glimpse of how we spent our time at the Sun Village Resort at Cofresi on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. Visit my blog www.mylifemosaic.com to see more pictures.

The only two times we ventured off site was once to drive into nearby Puerta Plata to look around and shop a bit, and another day to enjoy a snorkeling excursion. It was fun and tickled to be under water and have fish eat ripe bananas right out of our hands.

When I visit new places, I’m usually eager to see all of the sites, climb every mountain, visit every museum, etc. But this relaxing, all-inclusive package did tons to restore my over-tired mind.

Three plus books read, lots of good food and drink, my first ever self-indulgent pedicure, and a full week alone with my husband Roger for the first time in two years.

Yes, I’m actively fantasizing about how soon we can get ourlseves back on to a beach or lounge chairs. What is your ideal method for restoring body and mind?

This week’s article is about maximizing the bounty and opportunities with a summer state of mind.

With support & enthusiasm for your unique style,

How Will You Spend Your Summer Vacation?

FoxgloveThe sight of blue lupine growing wild by the side of the road. The sound of crickets humming on a hot, summer day while you read in the hammock. The smell of sumack as you hike on a local trail. The taste of freshly cut watermelon. The feel underfoot of the tide rushing back out to the sea.

These are treats mostly relegated to a few summer months. We spend more than half the year eagerly anticipating these simple pleasures, and then rarely have the quiet moment or luxury of extended empty hours to truly enjoy what was so expected and natural when we were children.

Another special summer childhood adventure was overnight camp. Remember the fear at arrival with all the nervous worries? Who are these other kids? What is expected of me? I don’t know if I can do it…

And then a week or two later, the fear was always replaced with mastery of new sports like sailing or archery, confidence in newly acquired outdoor living skills such as building fires or identifying edible berries, and commaraderie of new friends.

Make the most of these short-lived longer days, great weather, and brief interludes we get in summer. Plan what you’ll do as if you really did have a chunk of time earmarked for an experience just like those you enjoyed at summer camp. How do you really want to spend this prescious season?

Indulge Your Desire to Read, Listen to Music, Watch Movies

  • Go to an outdoor concert and bring a picnic
  • Read a book outside your preferred genre; indulge an urge for a mystery, romance or thriller
  • See a just released romantic comedy or action flick in a nicely chilled theater

Notice the Season and Its Bounty

  • Hand-crank ice cream with summer berries
  • “Pick Your Own” corn and other veggies
  • Gather seeds from flowers to extend your beds next year

Make New Friends & Time for Favorite Friends

  • Plan half-distance play dates with people you don’t see often
  • Join a book club and offer to host a meeting
  • Put a personal profile on one of the online social networking sites

Test & Enjoy Your Physical Being

  • Try sea kayaking or wall climbing
  • Start or end your day with a neighborhood walk
  • Strengthen your core with Yoga or Pilates

Learn Something New

  • Immerse yourself in a foreign language
  • Try a new style of cooking or perfect a recipe
  • Teach yourself to make a kite and then fly it!

RhubarbI encourage you to make the most of this summer. Take a “time out” from your usual routine and obligations to create space for experimenting with genuine fun and maybe a new passion or two.

If this seems impossible, you need immediate help! I’m jesting only a bit. If you’ve lost track of your inner child, seek out the counsel of close friends (who knew you when you were knee high) or a coach. They can detect those inner yearnings and lost passions. Life is meant to be satsifying and fun.

Gotta go! Fresh rhubarb growing in the backyard is just screaming to be baked in a pie… yum.

The 4-Hour Workweek

by Tim Ferris

I want me one of those!

Seriously, Tim Ferris’ book, The 4-Hour Workweek, is based on the premise that our larger lives shouldn’t or needn’t be subservient to our work… or more specifically our jobs.

The book is divided into four sections: Definition (determining the dreams of having, being and doing, and calculating the resulting Target Monthly Income and timelines for accomplishment), Elimination (getting rid of all the extraneous and unimportant), Automation (subtracting you from the need to do everything), and Liberation (how to spend all of your freed up time).

You could read this simply as a hypothetical game plan for work avoidance. However, Ferris is more serious than wanting a bestseller with a catchy name. He really believes that our lives have so much more possibility for fulfillment and adventure, and that learning and experiencing new things is necessary expression of what makes us tick.

So, if the idea of outsourcing big chunks of your routine life, enjoying mini-retirements (instead of waiting for the end), and escaping paralysis appeals to you, get The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich

If nothing else, this book will give you specific steps to reclaim pockets of time. With it as a guide, you can think about why you are holding back from living the life that you want.

I’m going to try the ideas in the book this summer, and I’ll report out after Labor Day.

Fearless Recommendation

Erase Your Fears

I received a link to this photo via Michael Bungay Stanier’s monthly newsletter. He’s the 2006 Canadian Coach of the year, and creator of the Eight Principles of Fun min-movie I shared the link to a few weeks ago.

Erase Your Fears

Take a few minutes to write down all of your fears. Think about how you could virtually erase them at the end of each day. Here are some ideas:

  • Take the paper they are written on and light it with a match.
  • Call a friend or tell your spouse what fears you wish to let go of at the end of the day.
  • Post your list to a blog or online community, and invite feedback from readers.

The process of acknowledging and owning fear is the first step to dismantling and vaporizing it. Liberate yourself from fear and lighten your load.
